Plus, it's really different and has its own particularly twisted appeal. With songs that have titles such as "Zombie Prostitute" and "Cannibal Buffet," one can hardly resist at least having a listen to see what this music is all about.

The CD is fun, funny and engaging as well. It's irreverent, yet not offensive. Combine the crazy subjects this band comes up with and catchy "show-tune" sounding tracks, and what you have is unlike other album you've ever heard. Guaranteed. "Cantina" tips its hat to Star Wars, and "Reagge Mortis" offers Jamaican flavor. The real jewel of this collection of creepy crawlies is track 8, "Stuck With You". The tune is a duet with The Dresden Dolls' Amanda Palmer that is a lament about married life delivered with plenty of humor.

There really isn't anything quite like this album. If you have a quirky sense of humor and enjoy a clever, tongue-in-cheek, toe-tappin' tune now and again, this is a must have. Try it out for Halloween, or put in on to perk up your spirits. It's a hoot.

Catherine L. Tully is a freelance writer and photographer who specializes in the arts. It is the name of our pirate ship, and now it is also a band--shipmates who love drinking songs as much as they love drinking, lead by the formidable "Captain Black Jack" Murphy. We don't care about politics, religion, or being the most-traditional band in the world. Our sound is sharp, unique, and designed for hours of good old-fashioned song as you drink the night away.

So if you're looking for traditional "Celtic music", leave now. We're gonna show you the FUN, RAUCOUS side of Celtic music. The type of music that will get your toes tapping, your beer splashing, your hearts racing, your eyes laughing, your thoughts crafting, your body thrashing, and your voice cracking from too much singing. Yeah. We know what you want to hear. Because we want to hear it too!

Download your Free Pirate CD!

So go ahead. Grab a pint of Irish Stout and join us in the pub. It doesn't have to be the same Irish pub. Yours will do. Just bring the CD out and give it to the bartender and say, I want music I can sing to! Then let the Irish Stout start flowing and satiate your thirst so that every day is St. Patrick's Day, thanks to "Captain Black Jack" Murphy and the Irish Stout.

Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers

Put those together and you have Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers, a CD for the wonderfully demented kitty cat fantatic. Listen to music you've heard on St. Patrick's Day or by The Dubliners, The Clancy Brothers, The Wolfe Tones, and the Irish rovers. Then laugh as all your favorite Irish Drinking Songs are rewriten with Cat song lyrics. Your love of Celtic music will never be the same!

Irish drinking songs and Irish folk music, in general, are some of my favorite songs to sing. I guess that comes from being a fan of The Dubliners, The Wolfe Tones, The Irish Rovers, and The Clancy Brothers. When I had a revelation in 2003 to compose an album entitled Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers, I decided to start writing. Lo and behold, I'm halfway there.

The album has not been recorded yet. So you'll still have to wait a while, but each song is based on a traditional Irish drinking song, but re-written with cat lover lyrics. The album features famous kitty cats from Sylvester and Tweety Bird to Cat from Red Dwarf. There are songs about black cats and tabby cats, songs to make you laugh and songs to make you cry.

If you are a cat lover like I am, I sincerely hope that Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers will be an absolute joyful album. And if you're not a cat lover or hate Irish drinking songs, I hope to change your mind.

Want Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers CD to finish sooner?

Help me build a demand.

Post a link to www.catdrinkingsongs.com

Tell your cat loving friends to come read the lyrics below.

The more demand that I can get for this CD, the sooner, I'll start production.

Adopt a Cat CD, your kind donation and sponsorship will bring drinking songs to cats and cat lovers around the globe. So it is no big surprise that there is also a lot of great Celtic Christmas music out there as well.

The idea of Celtic Christmas music is actually kinda funny since Christmas is not a typical Celtic holiday, except outside of Wales. Nevertheless, there are a lot of Celtic artists who celebrate Yule and the Winter Solstice. So Celtic Christmas music is Christmas or Yule music by Celtic artists. It might not entirely sound Celtic, but in America, that's such a generic term as it is.

But that's a discourse for another blog. Meantime, I've compiled a few webpages that feature Cetlic Christmas music. Check 'em out!

Celtic Christmas Music CDs

Celtic Christmas at the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast

CELTIC MP3s.com: Celtic Christmas Music & Winter Solstice Music

And if you want to hear some of the Celtic Christmas music I've released check out our CD, Christmas in Brobdingnag, Vol. 1.

Rediscovering My Folk Music Heritage

I was not raised on Celtic music. I heard a little bit of bagpipes growing up when my dad took me to some Highland Games like those at Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina. But that was about it.

When I was a kid, my dad's recreation involved playing folk music in the folk scene of Maryland. It involved a little bit of bluegrass and a lot of folk. He played the autoharp, mountain dulcimer, and other folk instruments, but the banjo is what I remember him playing the most. There were a lot of great songs from the 60s, 70s, and much, much older. I still have one of the song books he compiled.

I mention it, because yesterday, I was supposed to be working on my Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. Instead, I fumbled around on the net, and at the end of the day, I went for a walk with my autoharp. I started writing.

It's kinda funny how I write sometimes. I start strumming. And then just let words flow from my mouth. Then I grab my recorder and start recording. But yesterday, something special emerged.

Yesterday, a chorus came to me inspired by Lil' Bit, a cat who lives at the Haeuser Hotel. I spurted lyrics. And inspired by the hostess of the house, I put a bluesy twist to the song. And the lyrics exploded forth. Voila'! A new song!

After making a rough recording to remember the song for later recording, I started looking at other music in a similar vein, and my folk heritage re-emerged. I think that's what I will record when I get to Germany.

Which is kinda funny now that I think about. Heidelberg, Germany was the first place I every busked. And what did I play when I was there? American folk songs.

It's like I've been rediscovering my musical heritage. And it makes me happy. Maybe eventually, I'll talk my dad into recording on an album with me.

"Darkness Reveals the Beauty of Truth" by Aries9

I listened to "Darkness Reveals the Beauty of Truth" by Aries9 and again, WOW! What an amazing album.

Aries9 is Ari Koinuma, a Japanese rock artist, who creates sophisticated modern rock that combines grunge, metal and prog elements with evocative lyrics. If you're not familiar with Ari Koinuma, check the liner notes to my CD, Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers. He produced that album.

No. It sounds nothing like my cat CD, but it just goes to show that this man has an incredible talent for producing. "Darkness Reveals the Beauty of Truth" is fantastic. It has a great edge to it. The first songs in particular have a very contemporary sound. I was having trouble placing influences on those. They were reminiscent of early 90s Alt Rock, ala STP, Soundgarden, or Alice in Chains. If you like those bands or you just like to rock, this is a great CD for doing just that.

Pick up your copy of "Darkness Reveals the Beauty of Truth" from CD Baby. You'll be glad you did.

3 Ways to Make Money with your Podcast + 1 Bonus Way

Remember to read to the end for your bonus tip!

How would you like to make money with your podcast? If you are podcasting, the potential to generate revenue from your podcast is an extra-added benefit to you as a podcaster.

As a podcaster, you don’t have to worry about large overhead and the revenue generated through your podcast will be mostly profit.

There are three main ways in which you can make money with your podcast.

1. Generate Revenue through Commerical Sponsors

One of the greatest ways to generate revenue for your podcast is through commercial sponsorship of your show. If you are able to obtain a major sponsor, you can bring in large revenue for your podcast. As time goes on, major companies are beginning to recognize the true importance of podcasting.

Two Moms, Paige and Gretchen, from Virginia understand the significance of commercial sponsors. They host a weekly show called MommyCast that focuses on mothers. Paige is a mother of 5 and Gretchen is a mother of 2.

They have obtained two major sponsors for their show, Earthlink and Dixie. As a result, they are making substantial revenue just from commercial sponsorship to their show. When they started podcasting, they probably had no idea how popular their show would become. However, Earthlink and Dixie recognized the impact of their show and decided to become sponsors. http://www.mommycast.com/

If two Moms from Virginia can do this, anyone can accomplish this same goal. It doesn’t matter where you live or what you are podcasting about. If you are able to generate a substantial listening audience, the chances of obtaining major sponsors for your podcast will increase.

Commercial sponsorship for your podcast is an excellent way to generate a great source of income. If you are able to obtain a big sponsor, this could bring in large revenue for you as a podcaster.

When two major corporations like Earthlink and Dixie recognize podcasting as a way to reach potential customers, this is great news for all podcasters. When a major sponsor advertises on traditional radio, the radio station’s signal is limited by wattage to a specific geographic region. However, with podcasting, there is no geographic limitation. Anyone in the world with a computer or mp3 player can potentially hear the show. Thus, this is an excellent selling point to potential sponsors.

2. Make Money with Donations

Another way to generate revenue with your podcast is with donations. For example, Adam Kempenaar and Sam Hallgren host a twice-weekly film podcast from Chicago called Cinecast. They review different movies and give their opinions. Their podcast is becoming very popular and continues to grow on a daily basis. http://www.cinecast.com/

If you visit iTunes, you will see that they are listed as a featured podcast in their podcast directory. This is a major plus for Cinecast. http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/

Adam and Sam have decided to make money by requesting donations for their podcast. When you go to their website, you will see a button for PayPay in which listeners can make a donation to their podcast. PayPal has a positive reputation and offers an excellent way for accepting donations.

If you provide valuable information to your listener, they will appreciate your efforts and be more likely to make a donation. However, in time, Cinecast will probably be able to acquire national sponsors.

When you first start podcasting, donations are an excellent way to generate revenue as your audience grows.

3. Get Money from your Website or Blog

The third way that you can make money with your podcast is with advertisements on your website or blog. Google Adsense is one way that you can accomplish this goal. Adsense places ads on your website and when someone clicks on the ads, you get paid. https://www.google.com/adsense/

Another way to make money with your website or blog is by promoting different products through Clickbank. ClickBank offers over 10,000 products that you can promote as an affiliate. It is free to sign up as an affiliate at ClickBank and you make money every time someone purchases a product through the links that are displayed on your site. http://clickbank.com/

The key element to generating revenue is getting your podcast noticed. The best way to accomplish this goal is by getting your podcast listed in iTunes and also listing your podcast with other podcast directories. You need to let people know that you are out there so that you can obtain a large audience. Over time, as your audience grows, the potential for commercial sponsors will also grow.

Author Bio:

Patrick Curran is a professional radio Disc Jockey who takes you through the process of creating your own podcast. But he did miss one important tip!

4. Sell your own product.

Okay, you may not have a product right now. But there are quick and easy ways to develop something that will add value to your show. The trick is to make it something relevant to your podcast: an eBook with exclusive tips, a CD of past shows or exclusive content, t-shirts, stickers, exclusive access to an MP3 archive.

The important thing is to be open and honest about what you're offering. No titles are being added almost monthly to the Mage catalog. And our focus on free music downloads has given us a leg up on other Celtic music groups. Course in the process I haven't done much to promote this website in quite a while. I hope to change that in the near future. Keep an eye open for more news about free music much like the release of the 2007 edition of my article "17 Free Celtic Music Downloads for St. Patrick's Day".

Incidentally, the corresponding Celtic podcast based off that article topped the charts on iTunes as the #1 most-popular music podcast on that site!

St Patrick's Day Free Music Downloads

Every year for St. Patrick's Day, I compile a new list of St Patrick's Day MP3 downloads that are 100% free and legal. This year, I decided to present them in a new format. This year, all the files are compiled like a gigantic digital compilation CD. I ZIP the files up and you just need to download one file.

And if you were ever wondering what Song Henge is like. Well, now you have a better idea. Every month, I compile MP3 submissions into one of these ZIP files and send it out to hundreds of subscribers. Oh! And remember, at the end of the month, I'm switching to an annual fee. So you still have time to take advantage of the lifetime subscription fee for under twenty dollars.

Download "17 Celtic Music Downloads
for St. Patrick's Day" (73 MB)

(p.s. these MP3s will only be up for a month, so download them soon)

Burn Irish Music with Song Henge
100% Legal Burn Music CDs & MP3s for Free!

17 Free Irish & Celtic Music Downloads for St. Patrick's Day

"Seven Drunken Nights" by Brobdingnagian Bards
Scottish and Irish folk songs combined with the Lord of the Rings music and a wee bit o'Celtic fun. The Brobdingnagian Bards are The Original Celtic Renaissance music duo from Austin, Texas. Their unique brand of folk music on the autoharp, recorder, and mandolin has made them one of the most-popular Celtic music groups online where they give away thousands of free Celtic MP3 downloads daily. The Brobdingnagian Bards perform coast-to-coast, and in a given month might be at a Lord of the Rings Oscar Party, a Celtic festival, or a Science Fiction Conventions. However, they are an absolute favorite at Renaissance Faires where they add high-energy and wit to make every show a memorable experience.

Buy CD: "The Holy Grail of Irish Drinking Songs"

"Lord of the Pounce" by Marc Gunn
This was the fourth release off my Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers CD. It parodies "Lord of the Dance" and tells exciting tail of how cats were there since the beginning.

Cats. Irish music. Drinking songs. Nowhere else but from the bright imagination of Marc Gunn would those three elements be so neatly integrated. Yet Gunn, sometimes called "the hardest working man in Celtic music" around his hometown in Austin, is an accomplished musician and entrepreneur who not long ago headlined at the Oscar party for Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Buy CD: "Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers"

"The Polka Set" by Wild Clover Band
Don't let the fact that The Wild Clover Band is based in Nebraska throw you from the fact that they play amazing music. Their CD was an instant favorite of mine when I got it last year. That was one of the reasons I decided to include them as the first track on my newly released Victims of Irish Music compilation CD.

Because of this fusion of styles, The Wild Clover Band advertises themselves as "Irish Music and More." Playing in a local pub, the group began primarily as an instrumental group focusing on Irish and American fiddle tunes. They have now evolved into a group that specializes in Irish dance tunes, pub songs, and ballads and has played festivals, community concerts, pubs, and private functions throughout the state of Nebraska, as well as Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, and South Dakota.

Buy CD: "Behind the Blarney"

"Princess Royale" by Thomas "Doc" Grauzer
"Doc" Grauzer is a harper and storyteller in the Irish tradition. He is fascinated with the traditional harp music of Ireland, Scotland and Wales. When performing live he throws in historical background, folklore or weird stories between the tunes.

I first met Doc performing at Mother's Cafe in Austin where he has played three times a week for eight years! The sad tragedy is that Mother's recently had a fire. So for the first time in eight years there is no harp music there. So please help out an amazing Irish harper. Pick up a copy of this beautiful CD.

Buy CD: "Infernal Harp Racket"

"Rakes of Mallow" from Men of Thunda
Thundaing out of Kentucky, this group takes two of the earliest instruments known to man--the drums and the bagpipes--and pays tribute to an ancient form of Celtic musical entertainment.

What makes Men of Thunda different from military pipe bands is that Men of Thunda is strictly a band of entertainers. They do not enter in competitions. What they do, however, is strive to bring fun to their audience through their music, composed of spirited renditions of traditional Highland bagpipe melodies accompanied by tribal drumbeats.
It is a raucous good time for anyone who loves the pipes.

"Elevator" from Booze Brothers
What emerges when you mix Irish music with punk rock? Shaken or stirred, the result is The Booze Brothers. Their sound is unlike other Celtic punk bands: more traditional than Flogging Molly and more rock than the Young Dubliners. Having heard a lot of Celtic rock groups, I always look for something exceptional and different. This band fits the bill!

Buy CD: "Elevator"

"Alice's Reels " from The Tea Merchants
The Tea Merchants were formed a few years ago by Chris, Charlie, and Rob as a method by which to procure grocery money and a free evening tab at the bar. They are my favorite band to watch here in Austin. And this year, they were honored as the second Celtic band in Austin (after the Brobdingnagian Bards) to win an Austin Music Award. In a town touted as the Live Music Capitol of the World, that is no easy task. A BIG congrats to these brilliant musicians and for the release of their brand new CD.

Buy CD: "One Lump Or Two?" (coming soon)

"Scottish Ballade" by Christiane Cargill
I always appreciate bands who go for an "intimate" sound. When I saw that description on Christiane's site, I had to explore further. An accomplished and agile pianist with a gift for melodies and a fluid, soulful voice, she begged to take piano and organ lessons at the tender age of 3, while her legs were still too short to reach the pedals. Later, she was classically trained only to be drawn to the music of Ireland and Scotland, with a gorgeous result.

Buy CD: "Metamorphosis" (coming soon)

"The Skylark" from Culann's Hounds
I'm always looking for larger than life music for my magazine and podcast. Culann's House is one of those bands. And the name is fitting to as they were named after one of the great warriors of Irish legend. They're masters of the San Francisco Celtic scene and while they describe their style as a punk-Irish-hoedown. The music goes way beyond that with a solid traditional sound that connects with the listener like most music doesn't.

Buy CD: "The Year of the Dog"

"Bonnie Ship the Diamond" by Irish Stout
This duo combines the Irish with piratey raucous Irish songs straight from the pub. They're taking the internet by storm with their free podcast, called Your Weekly Irish Stout, featuring free Irish songs every week. So go out and pirate their music. This entry sponsored by the letter Rrrrrr!

Buy CD: A Collection of Irish Pub Songs

"The Willows/Three Ashes" from Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer
Since the days when Muckle Flugga tore up the charts on MP3.com, I've been a fan of this talented Celtic duo. Currently taking the folk world by storm, Vicki is one of the best pipers in the business, able to seamlessly veer from soulful airs to driving, up-tempo tunes to set every foot tapping, and this is all aided by Jonny's brilliantly inventive, subtle yet strong guitar work.

Although best-known for their instrumental skills, the duo have also added a healthy number of songs to their act, and have rightly established themselves as one of the best young duos around on the folk scene today!

Buy CD: "Scatter Pipes"

"Maid on the Shore" from Ceili Moss
Ceili Moss can be best described as "acoustic folk-rock with a Celtic-Pan-European edge that is not afraid of coloring a bit outside of the lines..." But if a band's description doesn't reel you in, then perhaps a personal testimony. I've been hearing people rave about this band for years. Sadly, it's only now that I actually found time to listen. And wow! Beautiful arrangements. I'll be listening to more of them in the future.

Buy CD: "On the Shore"

"Madam I'm A Darlin'" by Queen's Gambit
Based out of Oklahoma, Queen's Gambit not only performs in costume and in character, but also plays Celtic traditional folk music with a side of Renaissance Dance. Their style is appealing to people of all ages, and their on-site banter that flows during performances really brings their performances to life. But for me, it's a joy to see this fun band grow musically as they have done since I first met them many long years ago.

Buy CD: "Off the Board"

"Mrs. McGrath" by HOMELAND
Since 1999, HOMELAND has been rockin' the stage with their own style of music that is a conglomeration of new rock and old Celtic style, creating some "tricked out traditional" tunes since their origination. HOMELAND is one of those bands that will keep you on your feet, and keep your toes tappping.

Buy CD: "We Never Got This Far Alone"

"Time Ticks Away" by Jigger
Take a rowdy mandolin and guitar player who doesn't like sleeves on any of his shirts, combine that with a singer-songwriter obsessed with the themes of time, love, boats and drinking; slot in a wailing fiddle player who can't stay still; then add three part harmonies, a dash of larrikin humour and you get Jigger--an energetic three-piece who play spirited acoustic music. The music is lively with a hint of bluegrass and cool groove.

Buy CD: "Time Ticks Away" EP

"Downtown Baghdad Blues" by Black 47
They are a band that is best described as an unblinkingly political and thoroughly Irish form of rock 'n roll. Their songs cover a range of topics from the Northern Ireland conflict to civil rights and unrest in contemporary New York. But what sets the band apart is that their music can be humorous, informative and always rockin'. They are by far one of my favorite Celtic bands of all time!

Buy CD: "Elvis Murphy's Green Suede Shoes"

"Ar Sorserez (La Sorciere)/Muneira" by Rowan
Rowan's music not only takes the listener through a spiritual journey through time, but also transcends genres. From the 17th Century English Faire to an 18th Century Jacobite uprising to the American Civil War to the 20th Century Belfast, their music calls forth what human beings share down through the ages and across borders. With a balanced mix of ballads and jigs, this band's music reflects their roots in the deep spiritual resonance of the Celtic lands, they acknowledge, praise, and validate all folk music from all lands in all periods. It will take you on a journey through time and leave you wanting more.

Buy CD: "Tales Through Time"

And just because I got carried away, here's one more bonus MP3...

"Lark in the Morning" by Maidens IV
With the heartbeat of the bodhran, the spirit of the violin and viola, and the soft tunings of the guitar, Maidens IV is bringing a youthful vigor and class to Celtic and Folk sounds. These four sisters, Havilah, Heather, Abigail and Tabitha Justice have been performing classical and baroque music wih their nine siblings. With a new sound of their own, they formed Maidens IV, bringing a new sound and genre to the mix as they stoke the fire of the Celtic and Folk scene. I always loved this song and they execute it beautifully!

Buy CD: "Four Aflame"

Well, I hope you have a brilliant St. Patrick's Day. Drink responsibly and Slainte!

Oh! And don't forget some of these MP3s are time sensitive. They are exclusive to this magazine for ONE MONTH ONLY!

Marc Gunn is an Irish and Scottish folk singer with a strange affinity for Celtic ballads, drinking songs and cats. She asked me to play a song in the wedding too--"Frog Kissin'". The problem... I forgot my autoharp!

I don't know how I forgot it. So don't ask. I was really spacey. For some reason, I grabbed my laptop instead of my autoharp. Bizarre.

It worked out well enough despite the prob. A couple more musician friends of Stacy's were there--Chelle Murrey and Paul Martinez. Paul was kind enough to not only let me play his guitar, but horde it for about an hour and a half before the wedding so I could learn to play "Frog Kissin'" on the guitar.

Normally changing songs from autoharp to guitar isn't that big a deal. It's just chords. But "Frog Kissin'" has one of the weirder chord progressions that I play. So I practiced in the cold outdoor hair for quite while.

The wedding started and somehow I stumbled through the song with only a couple minor screw ups that I don't think anyone really noticed thanks to the humor of the song and the dancing of the bride, groom, and audience. But I think I'll stick to the autoharp for now.

Irish Songs with Irish Stout

In the beginning was the Irish Stout, and the stout was good.

The Irish Stout was SO good, in fact, we started singing about it--Irish Pub Songs. The Irish songs flowed as prolifically as the stout.

Irish Stout is no longer just a dark beer made from roasting malts and barley. Now it is also a band--a couple friends who love drinking songs as much as they love drinking.

The type of music that might get your toes tapping, your beer splashing, your hearts racing, your eyes laughing, your thoughts crafting, your body thrashing, and your voice cracking from too much singing. Yeah. We know what you want to hear. Because we want to hear it too!

Patrick's Day, thanks to Irish Stout.

Busking Wannabe

I'm having that annual craving to hit the road and go busking. Busking in Italy to be exact. I've never really done much busking outside of Renaissance Festivals. And honestly, I haven't ever really *tried* to effectively busk.

I mean, we have shows and all. But to find a location, lay out a hat or better yet, develop an attention-getting routine and show that will attract people to give you money, I've not really done.

The busking I've done alone or with the Brobdingnagian Bards involves me finding a nice location, laying out a hat and playing the most-placid songs and tunes I know. No good for busking.

I'd need a routine. Loud energizing songs. Or do I need those? Christene Le Doux mentioned playing soft, melody songs. I guess that's an option as well. The trick is to make it stand out and not just disappear which is what I typically aim for. Lack of confidence on my part. But I'm getting better. I'm playing out some solo shows more which helps.

But with Andrew, we've never been successful busking. We play for vendors at faires and they'll tip us. Sometimes patrons will take notice as well. But usually. Nope. I just haven't figured out the Art of Busking.

Side: I wonder if there's a book called The Art of Busking? Good title.

Anyway, some of what I read over at Busker Central (see more busking resources and more busking links) kinda inspired me to think more about it. The autoharp attracts attention, that's for sure, because of it's strange look... IF they see it, that is. But it's the art of getting them to see it and respond. And then how to get them to tip? That's what I'm not sure of at present...

Why am I even bothering to mention all this? Because I was looking into the possibility of moving to Italy. I'm checking all the resources to find out what is necessary. If I was living with family, I think I could make a good living in Italy. I just need to know the laws and such. Especially in regards to musicians. I'm not sure if they're considered self-employed which requires one document, or not. I assume so. Makes sense, but then when does Italy make sense? *smirk*

Finding laws for busking is no easy task. It'd almost be easier just to try and book a club gig... I think. Alas, even that's prolly a helluva challenge, especially for a solo Celtic folk singer. But if I could work it out, I could make some very nice money. I think it is time to start planning next summer's gigs, that may be include a few festivals in Italy as well.

Heart and Soul Music

I started learning "Heart and Soul" on the autoharp. And since it wasn't until college that I realized there were lyrics to the tune, I've always been enamoried with the idea of learning the vocal version so I am. But as I practiced and everytime I sang it, I could hear the voice of Jimmy Durante. And my imitation wasn't too bad. So I've spent the last couple o'days trying to capture me singing like Jimmy Durante singing "Heart and Soul" on the autoharp.

The toughest part is the playing the solo on the autoharp. I have a good recording of me sounding like him, but the solo isn't quite there. So if I can get it soon, I'm gonna stick with the performance I have which sounds pretty cool. Not quite there, but pretty decent.

It's kinda funny imitating people. I'm not really good at imitating people themselves. But I'm good at imitating imitators.

For instance, Jimmy Durante. I had no idea who he was until yesterday. But I've known his voice all my life. Ralph the Mouth from Happy Days used to do his "Ha cha cha". Spike from Tom and Jerry used his voice, as did Doggie Daddie from Hanna-Barbera. And he was the narrator in the Rankin-Bass animated TV special, Frosty the Snowman.

You also may've heard his version of "Time Goes By" and "Make Someone Happy" from the movie Sleepless in Seattle. And "You Made Me Love You" from You've Got Mail. Seems like there's another Meg Ryan movie that had Jimmy Durante singing too, but I can't remember what.

Anyway, when I get a final recording, I'll play it on my Pub Songs Podcast.

Irish Music Bards on NPR

I was excited to hear my name at the end of a special feature on NPR this morning. It was a 2nd Window Production on Voice of the Troubles: 25 Years After the Irish Hunger Strike. Wow. They played quite a few songs.

They played The Dubliner's Tabby Cats recording of "Cats Chasing Butterflies". That's Cedric of the Bedlam Bards on fiddle. They also played "The Parting Glass" from Soul of a Harper.

But that's not all. The Brobdingnagian Bards were also on the show. They played a short clip"My Irish Valentine" from A Celtic Renaissance Wedding at 7:30 into the second podcast (yes, the show was podcasted). That Celtic stuff of my band the Brobdingnagian Bards. This will be an interesting show.

Elysium Show to Feature
Unique Mix of Goth and Celtic Music

The only problem overall is that I wish I had had more time to promote the show. I have some great Goth flyers and have talked up the show consistently for a while now to our mailing list, my LiveJournal and on Myspace. Fans want to see this show. No doubt about that. But I want the venue packed.

Hopefully, Voltaire's fame will shine through and bring in a huge crowd as well Machine in the Garden. If I was really smart, I would've announced this a couple weeks ago. But alas, it's me.

Tonight, I started an Austin Italian Language Meetup group. I've been yearning to practice my Italian, especially since I hope to return to Europe this winter. So I got it started. Immediately, I realized I forgot to invite several folks I know who speak Italian and would enjoy this. Ah well. Next time.

As for the meetup, it went grand. There were five people who showed up, but it seemed like everyone had a good time talking in Italian and we learned a few words too. So big ol'success. Yay!

Drinking Cats Have Signed Record Deal

Austin, TX (PRWEB) June 6, 2006 -- O.K. Perhaps a slight technical misrepresentation, but it is true that Marc Gunn and the Dubliners’ Tabby Cats have been signed to Gestalt Records to distribute their album entitled “Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers.” This entertaining collection of Irish drinking songs is inspired by the furry little McKittens that are so near and dear to the heart of lead singer Marc Gunn and so many others. These cats are moving up in the world as they just put their paw print on this distribution deal with Gestalt to launch next month.

Marc describes his motivation for the album in the following way:

"I started singing Irish drinking songs when I co-founded the Brobdingnagian Bards. But I learned to write silly parodies from my dad. So when I was on the phone in 2003 and casually started singing a version of "Wild Rover" about cats, I had a revelation. I will rewrite my favorite Irish songs with lyrics about cats."

The album has been a cult favorite download for some time. One loyal fan has been quoted as saying:

"I love this [I'll Tell My Cat If me gran had heard it before passing, she'd sung it in the pubs for sure, right after The Dundee Cat. As a fellow cat person. Thanks for the laugh."

For those who can’t wait for the cd’s release next month, songs can be sampled and downloaded at http://www.catdrinkingsongs.com/cat_nip.shtml. For those who can, the album will be available at most retailers on- and off-line as well as directly through Gestalt Records.

With songs such as “When Kitty Eyes are Smiling” and “Furagone’s Wake” and other favorites, this collection of songs will certainly put a new face on some old standbys. Be careful though, that face may just have whiskers.

Gestalt Records focuses on bands that fall outside of the mainstream and would otherwise may not receive the opportunity to be distributed.

About Marc Gunn / The Dubliners’ Tabby Cats:

Marc Gunn is an Irish and Scottish folk singer with a strange affinity for Celtic ballads, drinking songs and cats. He is the lead singer for the Brobdingnagian Bards, an internet music promoter, podcaster, poet, photographer and publisher of many, many things on and offline.

The Dubliners' Tabby Cats is a cat-based folk music group that performs Irish drinking songs and traditional Irish music tunes in homes around the world. The group was formed online by Torre while their humans were away at work. Have you ever wondered what an Autoharp is? If you are intrigued by one or both of these questions or are looking for a new way to celebrate Father’s Day, Austin-based Celtic musician, Marc Gunn has an event for you.

First, for the uninitiated or the curious; an autoharp looks a bit like a zither with a damper system attached. It is commonly used in bluegrass and folk music of all kinds and figures prominently in the music stylings of Marc Gunn and his musical group the Brobdingnagian Bards. The autoharp produces a pleasant and very unique type of sound and enjoys a reputation of being easy to learn.

Marc will give an autoharp concert from 3-4 pm on Father’s Day (June, 18th) at Things Celtic, located at 1806 W. 35th Street, Austin. At 4:30 pm he will give a free instructional session on autoharp basics.

So bring your dad (or son), an autoharp, tuner and tuning wrench (if you have them) and Marc will be happy to get beginners started on this intriguing instrument. If you are just curious and don’t own an autoharp, come on down anyway, Marc will likely have one or two extra.

For more information on this event please follow the link below: http://www.marcgunn.com/articles/2006/05/fathers-day-show-at-things-celtic-in.shtml

ABOUT Marc Gunn / The Bards

www.thebards.net

Marc Gunn is an Irish and Scottish folk singer with a strange affinity for Celtic ballads, drinking songs and cats. This revelation inspired him to team up with Goth musician Voltaire for a first-of-it’s-kind show at The Elysium on June 30, 2006.

The Elysium is Austin's premiere Goth club and industrial haven. Voltaire (www.voltaire.net) is a brilliant Goth musician and satirist from New York City. The Brobdingnagian Bards (www.thebards.net) are Austin's Original Celtic Renaissance group. Take a few drinking songs and add a bit of mystical Lord of the Rings inspired-music and you have an idea of what they’re about.

As a huge fan of Voltaire, Marc Gunn sought him out on a recent trip to New York. He reached out to the musician to book him into the Elysium. During a conversation between the two artists they struck upon the crossover appeal. Both acts have previously appeared at major science fiction conventions such as DragonCon and the synergy of shared fans was too exciting to ignore. In was then that the idea for a joint show was born.

On June 30th, 2006, the two bands are booked to appear at The Elysium with another yet to be determined Goth music group. While in town, Voltaire will also make an in-store appearance at Things Celtic (details at http://www.thingsceltic.com). So follow the advice of Gunn; “Don your black kilt and eyeliner, grab a copy of Voltaire’s book What is Goth to find your Goth name, and join us at Austin’s best Goth Club, The Elysium for a show you won’t soon forget.

ABOUT Marc Gunn / The Bards
Marc Gunn is an Irish and Scottish folk singer with a strange affinity for Celtic ballads, drinking songs and cats. The Brobdingnagian Bards, a Celtic group specializing in Scottish and Irish folk songs and Science Fiction-based folk has been a strong presence on the web, as well as the touring circuit in clubs and at festivals. Their unique brand of folk music on the autoharp, recorder and mandolin has made them one of the most popular Celtic music groups in the on-line community.

The Bards have performed at venues as varied as The Lord of The Rings Oscar Party and science fiction conventions. They are a perennial favorite at Renaissance Faires from coast-to-coast.

Now after inking a U.S. Distribution deal with boutique distribution house Gestalt Records, The Bards are positioned to stretch their plaid-clad wings a little further.

Lead singer Marc Gunn had this to say about the deal, "Our fans have begged us to get our music in record stores. I'm thrilled that we can finally oblige them."

Gestalt Records focuses on bands that fall outside of the mainstream and would otherwise may not receive the opportunity to be distributed. According to their website:

"The goal of Gestalt is to create an environment that combines the talents of artists who work with dark, industrial, or experimental themes with traditional and non-traditional business resources to create a self-sustaining vehicle for the furtherance of these artists' careers".

Echoing this sentiment, The Bards are dedicated to bringing their brand of Celtic tunes to each and every fan who wants them. There is even a rumor that they may be heading North of the border next, so for our Canadian readers... save your loonies and your toonies for some great Celtic music, soon to be coming your way.

About The Bards / Marc Gunn

Scottish and Irish folk songs combined with the Lord of the Rings music and a wee bit o'Celtic fun. The Brobdingnagian Bards (pronounced brob-din-nahg-EE-en) are The Original Celtic Renaissance music duo from Austin, Texas. Their unique brand of folk music on the autoharp, recorder, and mandolin has made them one of the most-popular Celtic music groups online where they give away thousands of free Celtic MP3 downloads daily.

Marc Gunn is the lead singer for the Brobdingnagian Bards. He is also Celtic music podcaster and promoters as well as publisher of Celtic MP3s Music Magazine.

http://thebards.net/ Brobdingnagian Bards, Celtic Folk Music
http://celticmusicpodcast.com/ Irish & Celtic Music Podcast

About Gestalt Records

The current apex of Gestalt Artforms is Gestalt Records, which will focus on the music of artists who work in these genres that would otherwise be marginalized by mainstream culture. That's on June 17, 2006 at 4:30pm. I need to write a PSA for it since it is free. Should be an interesting thing.

I love the autoharp. I first "swiped" my dad's autoharp in the early 1990s. But it wasn't until 1997 that I first started learning the autoharp and planning to use it in a professional fashion.
