Live Goth Music in Austin from the GothFather

One more week until Voltaire shows up for one helluvan evening of Goth music and satire... oh and that other stuff too. That Celtic stuff of my band the Brobdingnagian Bards. This will be an interesting show.

Elysium Show to Feature
Unique Mix of Goth and Celtic Music

The only problem overall is that I wish I had had more time to promote the show. I did what I could. I have some great Goth flyers and have talked up the show consistently for a while now to our mailing list, my LiveJournal and on Myspace. Fans want to see this show. No doubt about that. But I want the venue packed.

Hopefully, Voltaire's fame will shine through and bring in a huge crowd as well Machine in the Garden. With just one more week, we'll hope for the best. And lots o'goth music.

Austin Italian Language Meetup

See. If I was really smart, I would've announced this a couple weeks ago. But alas, it's me.

Tonight, I started an Austin Italian Language Meetup group. I've been yearning to practice my Italian, especially since I hope to return to Europe this winter. So I got it started. Immediately, I realized I forgot to invite several folks I know who speak Italian and would enjoy this. Ah well. Next time.

As for the meetup, it went grand. There were five people who showed up, but it seemed like everyone had a good time talking in Italian and we learned a few words too. So big ol'success. Yay!

Drinking Cats Have Signed Record Deal

Austin, TX (PRWEB) June 6, 2006 -- O.K. Perhaps a slight technical misrepresentation, but it is true that Marc Gunn and the Dubliners’ Tabby Cats have been signed to Gestalt Records to distribute their album entitled “Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers.” This entertaining collection of Irish drinking songs is inspired by the furry little McKittens that are so near and dear to the heart of lead singer Marc Gunn and so many others. These cats are moving up in the world as they just put their paw print on this distribution deal with Gestalt to launch next month.

Marc describes his motivation for the album in the following way:

"I started singing Irish drinking songs when I co-founded the Brobdingnagian Bards. But I learned to write silly parodies from my dad. So when I was on the phone in 2003 and casually started singing a version of "Wild Rover" about cats, I had a revelation. I will rewrite my favorite Irish songs with lyrics about cats."

The album has been a cult favorite download for some time. One loyal fan has been quoted as saying:

"I love this [I'll Tell My Cat If me gran had heard it before passing, she'd sung it in the pubs for sure, right after The Dundee Cat. As a fellow cat person. Thanks for the laugh."

For those who can’t wait for the cd’s release next month, songs can be sampled and downloaded at http://www.catdrinkingsongs.com/cat_nip.shtml. For those who can, the album will be available at most retailers on- and off-line as well as directly through Gestalt Records.

With songs such as “When Kitty Eyes are Smiling” and “Furagone’s Wake” and other favorites, this collection of songs will certainly put a new face on some old standbys. Be careful though, that face may just have whiskers.

Gestalt Records focuses on bands that fall outside of the mainstream and would otherwise may not receive the opportunity to be distributed.

A Unique Way to Celebrate Father's Day, Listen to or Learn to Play the Autoharp

AUSTIN, TX (PRWEB) June 8, 2006 -- Have you ever wanted to learn to play the Autoharp? Have you ever wondered what an Autoharp is? If you are intrigued by one or both of these questions or are looking for a new way to celebrate Father’s Day, Austin-based Celtic musician, Marc Gunn has an event for you.

First, for the uninitiated or the curious; an autoharp looks a bit like a zither with a damper system attached. It is commonly used in bluegrass and folk music of all kinds and figures prominently in the music stylings of Marc Gunn and his musical group the Brobdingnagian Bards. The autoharp produces a pleasant and very unique type of sound and enjoys a reputation of being easy to learn.

Marc will give an autoharp concert from 3-4 pm on Father’s Day (June, 18th) at Things Celtic, located at 1806 W. 35th Street, Austin. At 4:30 pm he will give a free instructional session on autoharp basics.

So bring your dad (or son), an autoharp, tuner and tuning wrench (if you have them) and Marc will be happy to get beginners started on this intriguing instrument. If you are just curious and don’t own an autoharp, come on down anyway, Marc will likely have one or two extra.

Elysium Show to Feature Unique Mix of Goth and Celtic Music

AUSTIN, TX (PRWEB) June 13, 2006 -- What do Goth and Celtic Music have in common? “A lot of fans,” according to Marc Gunn, lead singer of the Brobdignagian Bards, an Austin based Celtic Group. This revelation inspired him to team up with Goth musician Voltaire for a first-of-it’s-kind show at The Elysium on June 30, 2006.

The Elysium is Austin's premiere Goth club and industrial haven. Voltaire (www.voltaire.net) is a brilliant Goth musician and satirist from New York City. The Brobdingnagian Bards (www.thebards.net) are Austin's Original Celtic Renaissance group. Take a few drinking songs and add a bit of mystical Lord of the Rings inspired-music and you have an idea of what they’re about.

As a huge fan of Voltaire, Marc Gunn sought him out on a recent trip to New York. He reached out to the musician to book him into the Elysium. During a conversation between the two artists they struck upon the crossover appeal. Both acts have previously appeared at major science fiction conventions such as DragonCon and the synergy of shared fans was too exciting to ignore. In was then that the idea for a joint show was born.

On June 30th, 2006, the two bands are booked to appear at The Elysium with another yet to be determined Goth music group. While in town, Voltaire will also make an in-store appearance at Things Celtic (details at http://www.thingsceltic.com). So follow the advice of Gunn; “Don your black kilt and eyeliner, grab a copy of Voltaire’s book What is Goth to find your Goth name, and join us at Austin’s best Goth Club, The Elysium for a show you won’t soon forget.

Brobdingnagian Bards Announce Distribution Deal With Gestalt Records

Austin, TX (PRWEB) June 9, 2006 -- Great Celtic music just got easier to find for loyal fans of the genre. The Brobdingnagian Bards, a Celtic group specializing in Scottish and Irish folk songs and Science Fiction-based folk has been a strong presence on the web, as well as the touring circuit in clubs and at festivals. Their unique brand of folk music on the autoharp, recorder and mandolin has made them one of the most popular Celtic music groups in the on-line community.

The Bards have performed at venues as varied as The Lord of The Rings Oscar Party and science fiction conventions. They are a perennial favorite at Renaissance Faires from coast-to-coast.

Now after inking a U.S. Distribution deal with boutique distribution house Gestalt Records, The Bards are positioned to stretch their plaid-clad wings a little further.

Lead singer Marc Gunn had this to say about the deal, "Our fans have begged us to get our music in record stores. I'm thrilled that we can finally oblige them."

Gestalt Records focuses on bands that fall outside of the mainstream and would otherwise may not receive the opportunity to be distributed. According to their website:

"The goal of Gestalt is to create an environment that combines the talents of artists who work with dark, industrial, or experimental themes with traditional and non-traditional business resources to create a self-sustaining vehicle for the furtherance of these artists' careers".

Echoing this sentiment, The Bards are dedicated to bringing their brand of Celtic tunes to each and every fan who wants them. There is even a rumor that they may be heading North of the border next, so for our Canadian readers... save your loonies and your toonies for some great Celtic music, soon to be coming your way.
