Firefly's Ballad of Jayne Parody

Cedric of the Bedlam Bards recorded on my cat CD this past weekend. He told me he wrote a filk of "The Ballad of Jayne" in honor of Joss Whedon. I found it at the FireFly website.

You can help Spread the Signal by downloading & forwarding this free Firefly MP3 now. And now the Bedlam Bards'Firefly CD is on sale.

The Ballad of Joss

Joss, the man they call Joss . . .

He wrote about spaceships and shepherds and whores,
Stood up to the networks and gave ‘em what for.
Fox cancelled his program, but that was their loss--
The creator of Firefly, the man they call Joss!

Our Joss saw the viewers’ hearts breakin’,
He heard the Browncoats’ lament,
He saw the Fox network takin’,
His show in a way that made no sense.
(He said) “You can’t do that to my program,
Can’t grind it under your heel.”
So he took all the cast,
And now at last,
They’ve landed a Big Damn Movie deal!

He wrote about spaceships and shepherds and whores,
Stood up to the networks and gave ‘em what for.
Fox cancelled his program, but that was their loss--
The creator of Firefly, the man they call Joss!

Now here is what separates Whedon,
From writers who slave in the core,
The man they call Joss,
Well, he said to Fox,
“I’m going where no show has gone before.”
He told us about reavers,
He told us about sin,
He took us to the black,
And we ain’t comin’ back,
‘till all those crazy Browncoats rise again!

He wrote about spaceships and shepherds and whores,
Stood up to the networks and gave ‘em what for.
Fox cancelled his program, but that was their loss--
The creator of Firefly, the man they call Joss!

Now, here is what separates Firefly
From other shows you’re likely to see—
It’s meaningful and witty,
And the setting’s really gritty,
And the theme song is about Serenity.
It’s a little like a western,
And a little like X-Files,
It’s better than Trek,
And funnier than Shrek,
And it beats out Andromeda by miles!

He wrote about spaceships and shepherds and whores,
Stood up to the networks and gave ‘em what for.
Fox cancelled his program, but that was their loss--
The creator of Firefly, the man they call Joss!

Filk Music CD Tops the Charts

It was an exciting week. On Monday, the Brobdingnagian Bards released their eighth studio album on CDBaby. On Tuesday, they sold out of the hundred copies that were pre-sent to that website. On Wednesday, CDBaby listed the new filk music album as the #3 Top Seller on CDBaby. More CDs arrived last night. Those too are almost sold out.

IMHO, this is a big week for filk music. Due to the novelty nature of filk music, filk is not typically given the credit it is due. But that really changed this week. Now, filk music is dominating the charts and helping to educate others that great music doesn't need to be normal. (whatever normal maybe)

Now if you like filk music about Star Wars, The Priness Bride, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or The Last Unicorn, order a copy of Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales and let's keep the filks a-rolling.

The Fantastic Four Movie

It's Wednesday afternoon. I just got back from watching The Fantastic Four over at Tinseltown. That's just cool. It's like a school day, and I get to watch movies!

Now let's be fair. This is a business expense. I mean, here I am writing a movie review. And I'm considering the idea of a song. I always though Johnny Torch was a cool character. Though I must he was just a bit of an arrogant ass in this movie. C'est la vie.

The movie was a lot of fun. Had me engaged throughout. They did a great job bring out the personal nature of each of them. That's fantastic... no pun intended... no really.

From the evolution (again no pun intended) of their powers to the discovery of their powers, I really felt I got to know each of them. Even bastard Dr. Doom. Though I find it boggling no one bothered to smash the body of super cooled Doom at the end. I mean, c'mon. Let's cover our asses why don't we. He pretty much seems invincible otherwise.

The Fantastic Four music I must say was mediocre. Very generic superhero drama crap. Give me something original. This may well've been any other superhero movie score, but no where near as good IMHO.

Overall, a big thumbs up, but I don't feel myself dying to see the next movie. And they DID set it up for another. Whenever. Might be cool to see, but to quote an old childhood friend, "No big whoop!"

Austin Symphony's Concert in the Park

Last night, I got to go to the Concert in the Park that is put on by the Austin Symphony. It was fantastic. This week was #6 of 12 with a Brass Quintet.

They played Grand Valley Fanfare, Quintet-Allegro vivace, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Landscapes, Sailor's Hornpipe, The Roaring Twenties, Kentucky Sunrise, A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square, That's A Plenty, Ain't Misbehavin', Washington Post, and and Armed Forces Salute.

In addition to great music, the musicians put on a great show. Definitely work checking out if you haven't.

Oh! And there was a bonus attraction too. There were a lot of kids running around and playing in the dirt. If it wasn't planned, it sure was some nice Performance Art.
